# Change your password

> Change or set the password of your Prisme.ai account, and sign out every other session at the same time

You can change the password of your Prisme.ai account at any time from your security settings. Changing it also signs you out on every other browser and phone, so that whoever may know your old password loses access.

<Info>
  This page applies to accounts that sign in with an email and a password. If you sign in through your company's single sign-on (SSO), your password is managed by your identity provider: change it there.
</Info>

## Before you start

* You are signed in to the Prisme.ai console with an email and password account, or with a passkey.
* You can confirm your identity: with a passkey, with your current password, or with your current password and a code from your authenticator app if you set one up.
* Choose a new password of at least 8 characters. A phrase of several words is easier to remember and harder to guess. Your administrator may require a different length: the form tells you the rule that applies.

## Change your password

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open your security settings">
    Open `/settings/security` on your console's address, for example `https://console.example.com/settings/security`. The **Settings** page opens on **Security**, on the **Sign-in methods** tab. The **Password** section is the first one.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start the change">
    Click **Change password**.

    If you signed in with a passkey only and never had a password, the button reads **Set a password**: the steps are the same.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm it's you">
    If you have not confirmed your identity in the last 5 minutes, the **Confirm it's you** dialog opens. Use one of the methods it offers:

    * Click **Use a passkey** and follow your browser's prompt.
    * Or enter your **Current password**, and the **6-digit code** from your authenticator app if one is set up, then click **Confirm**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your new password">
    Type your new password in **New password**. Click the eye icon (**Show password**) to check what you typed. The hint under the field turns green once the length is right.

    The dialog tells you how many other sessions will be signed out.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What happens after the change

* A **Password changed** notification confirms the change and says how many sessions were signed out. Click **See my devices** to review the browsers and phones still connected.
* Every other browser and phone connected to your account is signed out and must sign in again with the new password. The session you used to make the change stays open.
* Your personal access tokens are kept, so your scripts and integrations keep working. If you suspect someone else used your account, review them in **Settings** > **Security** > **Access tokens** and delete those you did not create.
* You receive an email titled "Your password was changed". If you did not make the change, follow its **Reset my password** link immediately, then tell the administrator of your organization.

<Warning>
  If the notification says that some sessions could not be signed out, open the **Devices** tab and sign out those you do not recognise yourself.
</Warning>

## Verify the change

1. Sign out of the console.
2. Sign in again with your email and your new password.

The sign-in succeeds with the new password, and the **Password** section of your security settings shows the date of the change.

## Why a password is refused

The form explains why a password cannot be used. Fix it and click **Save** again.

| Message | What to do |
| - | - |
| `The password must be between 8 and 128 characters long.` | Use a longer or shorter password. The bounds shown are the ones your administrator configured. |
| `This password appears in known data breaches: it would be guessed quickly. Choose another one.` | Choose a password that you have not used elsewhere. Prisme.ai compares it with lists of passwords known from data breaches. |
| `The password must not contain your email address or your name.` | Remove your email address, its first part, your first name and your last name from the password. |
| `Choose a password different from your current one.` | Choose a new password. |
| `This password does not meet the password policy of this instance. Ask your administrator for its rules.` | Your organization adds its own rule. Ask your administrator what it requires. |

## If you forgot your password

On the sign-in page, click **Forgot password?**, enter your email and click **Send Reset Link**. Follow the link you receive within one hour, enter your **New password** twice and click **Reset Password**.

A reset signs you out everywhere and sends you the same confirmation email. Your personal access tokens are kept. Accounts that sign in through SSO receive no reset link.

## Use a password manager

Password managers that support the standard change-password address open the right screen for you: `/.well-known/change-password` on your console's address leads to your security settings.
